Far Niente Winery: Our Experience at This Historic Napa Valley Estate

Some Napa wineries impress you with dramatic architecture. Others put almost all the focus on the wine. Far Niente manages to make the entire estate part of the experience.

Set among the vineyards of Oakville, the historic stone winery overlooks manicured lawns, mature trees, gardens and water features. Arriving at Far Niente feels less like walking into a tasting room and more like being invited onto a private Napa Valley estate.

We've visited Far Niente more than once, and it remains one of the wineries we recommend when someone wants a classic, polished Napa Valley experience with excellent wine in a beautiful setting.

The Far Niente Estate

Far Niente has a sense of history that's increasingly difficult to find in Napa Valley.

The winery dates to the 19th century, and the historic stone building sits above beautifully maintained grounds in Oakville. Rather than constructing a flashy contemporary tasting room, Far Niente's appeal comes from the combination of its historic architecture, vineyards and gardens.

Take some time to appreciate the property rather than rushing directly to the tasting. The lawns, mature trees, pond and surrounding vineyards are a significant part of the experience.

On a sunny Napa afternoon, it's difficult to imagine a prettier setting for a winery.

Exploring the Grounds

One of the things we particularly enjoy about Far Niente is that the experience extends beyond the wine.

The landscaped grounds feel peaceful and remarkably removed from the busy Napa Valley roads. Vineyards stretch beyond the gardens while fountains and water features add to the estate-like atmosphere.

It's also a great contrast to some of Napa's other memorable wineries. Jarvis Estate, for example, is defined by what happens after you disappear underground into its caves. Far Niente is almost the opposite: much of its appeal comes from the beautiful surroundings above ground.

Both are memorable, but for completely different reasons.

The Far Niente Tasting Experience

Far Niente delivers the type of tasting experience that fits the surroundings: polished, relaxed and focused on the wines.

On one of our visits, we were able to taste outdoors overlooking the gardens and pond.

This is one of my favorite photos from our visits because it captures what Far Niente does particularly well. You aren't simply sitting at a tasting bar moving quickly through a flight. The surroundings encourage you to slow down and enjoy the experience.

That's exactly how we prefer to experience Napa.

The Wines at Far Niente

Far Niente is particularly associated with Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, two wines that make a natural focal point for a tasting here.

For Cabernet lovers, Oakville is one of Napa Valley's most celebrated areas, and Far Niente provides an opportunity to explore Cabernet in the place where it is made.

One particularly interesting part of a visit can be the opportunity to see or taste older vintages. Vertical tastings are a great reminder of how dramatically Napa Cabernet can evolve with bottle age.

Rather than choosing Far Niente solely because of the beauty of the estate, we think the combination is what makes it work: the setting gets your attention, but the wines justify the visit.

Don't Overlook Dolce

One of the more interesting wines associated with the Far Niente family is Dolce, a late-harvest wine that offers a completely different experience from the Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay for which Far Niente is best known.

Often described as a Napa Valley take on the great late-harvest wines of Bordeaux, Dolce is made from Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc and develops its concentrated sweetness through botrytis, or “noble rot.”

The result is a rich dessert wine with layers of ripe fruit, honey and spice, balanced by enough acidity to keep it from feeling overly heavy.

Dolce at the end of a tasting provides such a dramatic contrast to the dry wines that precede it. It's also a wine that can be easy to overlook when people think about Far Niente primarily in terms of Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.

If Dolce is included during your visit, don't skip it—even if you don't normally consider yourself a dessert wine drinker. It's one of the more distinctive wines in the broader Far Niente portfolio and a memorable way to finish the tasting.

Wine and Food Pairings

Depending on the tasting experience, wines are accompanied by thoughtfully selected cheese pairings.

Pairings can make a substantial difference when tasting several wines, particularly when moving between Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon.

On one of our visits, the experience included a selection of cheeses and accompaniments paired with the wines.

As always, the exact wines, vintages, food pairings and tasting formats can change, so consider our photos a snapshot of our visits rather than a promise of the current lineup.

What Makes Far Niente Special?

Napa has no shortage of beautiful wineries. Far Niente stands out because the different pieces fit together so well.

There's history without the property feeling dated. The grounds are immaculate without feeling like a theme park. The tasting is upscale without losing sight of the wine.

And then there's the setting.

If someone asked us to picture the quintessential Napa Valley winery experience, Far Niente would be pretty close.

Is Far Niente Worth Visiting?

Yes. Far Niente is one of the Napa wineries we would readily visit again.

We particularly recommend it for first time Napa visitors, because it delivers many of the things people imagine when planning a wine-country trip: beautiful vineyards, an historic winery, landscaped grounds, attentive hospitality and serious Napa Valley wines.

It's also a particularly good choice for:

  • Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay drinkers

  • Couples looking for a beautiful winery experience

  • Visitors who appreciate historic properties

  • Wine travelers who prefer intimate, polished tastings

  • Anyone looking for a quintessential Oakville winery

If you're building a day around three wineries, we'd make Far Niente one of the major stops rather than trying to squeeze it between several shorter tastings.

Far Niente vs. Other Napa Wineries

After visiting many wineries throughout Napa Valley, we've found that the best itineraries combine different types of experiences rather than visiting three wineries that feel essentially the same.

Far Niente works particularly well as the classic Napa estate experience.

Pair it with something completely different—an underground cave winery such as Jarvis Estate, a mountain winery, or a more contemporary property—and your day becomes much more interesting.

That's also why Far Niente continues to stand out after multiple visits. It isn't trying to be Napa's newest or most theatrical winery.

It feels unmistakably like Napa Valley.

Our Take on Far Niente

We've returned to Far Niente because it offers something we value more and more as we revisit Napa: a complete experience rather than simply a tasting.

The wine matters most, but the setting, hospitality and sense of place can turn a good tasting into a winery you remember years later

Far Niente succeeds on both sides.

We enjoy the wines, but we also remember sitting outside overlooking the water, walking through the grounds and seeing the historic winery rising above the trees.

With so many Napa wineries competing for a limited number of spots on an itinerary, that's important.

Far Niente remains one of our favorite classic Napa Valley winery experiences.

Planning Your Visit

Far Niente is located in Oakville in Napa Valley, making it relatively easy to incorporate into a day exploring wineries in the central part of the valley.

We recommend making a reservation in advance and allowing enough time to enjoy the property rather than scheduling your next tasting too closely.

LandPourExplore Tip: Don't arrive, taste and immediately leave. Build some extra time into your schedule to enjoy the grounds. The estate itself is part of the reason to visit Far Niente.
