Jarvis Estate: A Napa Winery Unlike Any Other

There are hundreds of wineries in Napa Valley, but few make an entrance quite like Jarvis Estate.

From the outside, there is surprisingly little to reveal what lies beyond the doors built into the hillside. Step inside, however, and you enter an extraordinary underground winery filled with arched tunnels, rows of aging barrels and even a waterfall.

We first visited Jarvis more than a decade ago and have returned several times since. Even after visiting many wineries throughout Napa Valley, walking into Jarvis still feels different.

Why Jarvis Estate Is Different

The defining feature of Jarvis is that the winery itself is underground.

Rather than simply digging a cellar for barrel storage, Jarvis created an extensive cave system where much of the winemaking process takes place. The naturally cool underground environment provides favorable conditions for aging wine while creating one of Napa Valley's most memorable winery tours.

The experience begins before you even enter.

The understated entrance disappears into the hillside. There is no grand château or sprawling modern tasting room announcing your arrival. Instead, you walk toward a set of doors built directly into the earth.

And then things get interesting.

Inside the Jarvis Caves

Once underground, the architecture becomes the star.

Long, softly illuminated tunnels stretch into the distance, lined on both sides with barrels. The curved ceilings and repeating arches give portions of the winery an almost cathedral-like appearance.

This is one of those rare winery tours where the setting is every bit as interesting as what's in your glass.

Because we've returned to Jarvis several times, we've had the opportunity to experience these caves repeatedly. They remain among the most distinctive winery spaces we've encountered in Napa Valley.
