Getting to Waiheke Island
Waiheke Island is about a 40-minute ferry ride from downtown Auckland, making it one of the easiest wine day trips in New Zealand. Visitors typically arrive at Matiatia Ferry Terminal before exploring the island’s wineries by taxi, tour, or shuttle.

Casita Miro Winery
Our first winery stop was Casita Miro, one of the island’s most distinctive vineyards. Inspired by Spanish architecture and cuisine, the estate offers wine flights paired with small tapas-style bites.
The tasting included several wines alongside carefully selected food pairings - olives, cheese, and house made specialties each designed to highlight the flavors of the wines.
Beyond the tasting, the vineyard grounds are stunning, with Mediterranean style gardens and cypress lined views across the valley.
Vineyard Walks and Scenic ViewsAfter the tasting we spent time walking through the vineyards and gardens. Waiheke’s landscape is dramatic - rolling green hills, vineyards stretching toward the ocean, and gardens designed to frame the views.
Many wineries encourage visitors to wander the grounds, making the experience feel more like a wine country retreat than a typical tasting stop.
Batch Winery
Later in the afternoon we visited Batch Winery, one of the highest vineyards on Waiheke Island. The elevated location provides panoramic views across vineyards and out toward the ocean.
The atmosphere here is relaxed - visitors lounge on the grass, sip wine, and take in the scenery. It’s an ideal place to slow down and enjoy Waiheke’s laid back wine culture.
Lunch at The Oyster Inn
After arriving on Waiheke Island we stopped for lunch at The Oyster Inn, a relaxed coastal restaurant located in the village of Oneroa.
The restaurant sits just above the waterfront, offering beautiful views across Oneroa Bay. From the terrace and dining room windows you can watch sailboats drifting across the Hauraki Gulf while enjoying lunch.
The Oyster Inn is known for its fresh seafood and relaxed coastal atmosphere, making it an ideal first stop before exploring the island’s wineries.

Waiheke Island has over 30 wineries, many of which specialize in Bordeaux-style reds and Syrah, thanks to the island’s warm microclimate and maritime influence.
