​Nara  Day Trip  from  Osaka  or  Kyoto: Deer, Temples, Sake & Cocktails

Nara is one of the easiest and most rewarding day trips from either Osaka or Kyoto. Most visitors come to see the famous bowing deer, but I found that Nara offers much more: ancient temples, Japan's largest bronze Buddha, traditional sake breweries, excellent noodles, and even a surprisingly good cocktail bar.

Stop 1: Nara Park and the Famous Deer

The first stop was Nara Park, home to more than 1,000 free-roaming deer.
The deer are everywhere - resting beneath trees, wandering through temple grounds, and even crossing streets at crosswalks. While many visitors purchase deer crackers, I found the best moments came from simply watching them interact with visitors and each other.
These were some of my favorite photo opportunities of the day.

Stop 2: Todai-ji Temple

The highlight of Nara is Todai-ji Temple.
The massive wooden hall houses one of Japan's most famous religious treasures: the Great Buddha of Nara.

Walking into the hall and seeing the enormous bronze Buddha for the first time is genuinely impressive. The scale is difficult to appreciate until you're standing beneath it.

Stop 3: Lunch in Nara

​For lunch I stopped for a simple noodle meal that ended up being one of the most enjoyable meals of the day.
Fresh noodles topped with a soft egg and tempura-style fish cake provided a welcome break from sightseeing and were both filling and inexpensive.

After lunch I walked through Nara's historic district to visit Harushika Sake Brewery.
Founded in the late 1800s, Harushika is one of the most respected sake producers in Nara and offers tasting flights that introduce visitors to several different styles of sake.
It's a fun "excursion", the sake and tasting are very inexpensive - HINT- You get what you pay for :)

One of the surprises of the day was finding an excellent cocktail bar in central Nara.
The bar provided a perfect late afternoon break before heading back to Osaka. The handcrafted cocktails were far more sophisticated than I expected for a city that most visitors only associate with temples and deer.
If you enjoy cocktails while traveling, Nara can easily offer more than just a cultural sightseeing stop.

Is Nara Worth a Day Trip?
Absolutely.

Many visitors rush through Nara in two or three hours, but spending a full day allowed me to enjoy:
Nara Park deer
Todai-ji Temple and the Great Buddha
 Traditional sake tasting at Harushika
Local noodle lunch
Historic streets and architecture
An unexpected cocktail bar stop

For travelers staying in either Osaka or Kyoto, Nara is one of Japan's easiest and most rewarding day trips.

Final Thoughts
Nara ended up being one of my favorite day trips from Japan. While the famous deer attract most visitors, I found the combination of temples, historic streets, sake tasting, local noodles, and even a great cocktail bar made Nara much more interesting than expected. Whether you're staying in Osaka or Kyoto, Nara is well worth dedicating a full day to explore.
