Park  Hyatt  Kyoto  Review

Sunset over Higashiyama from the terrace of Park Hyatt Kyoto, with Yasaka Pagoda rising above the rooftops.

Kyoto is one of Japan’s most atmospheric destinations, blending historic temples, traditional tea culture, and refined luxury hotels such as the Park Hyatt Kyoto in the Higashiyama district.

Minimalist Japanese design defines the guest rooms, with natural wood, soft lighting, and floor-to-ceiling views of a private garden terrace.

The spacious bathroom features natural stone and a deep soaking tub.

Japanese breakfast set at Park Hyatt Kyoto Kyoyamato restaurant

Breakfast at Park Hyatt Kyoto is one of the highlights of the stay and worth planning for.
As a Hyatt Globalist, breakfast is complimentary. Guests can choose between:

  • A Western breakfast served at Kyoto Bistro

  • A traditional Japanese breakfast at Kyoyamato for a small upgrade

I tried the Japanese breakfast twice, and the menu changed both mornings.

The Traditional Japanese Breakfast
The Japanese breakfast is a beautifully presented multi-course set designed around seasonal Kyoto ingredients.
Typical components included:

  • Grilled fish (salmon or black cod with Saikyo miso)

  • Fresh sashimi

  • Tamago (Japanese omelette)

  • Seasonal vegetables

  • Tofu dishes

  • Rice from Kyotango

  • Miso soup

  • Pickled vegetables

  • Fruit for dessert

Everything arrives arranged in a lacquered tray with multiple small dishes — balanced, precise, and very different from a Western hotel breakfast.

Menus Change Daily
One of the best parts of the experience was that the menu changed each morning.
One morning featured:

  • Saikyo miso–marinated grilled salmon

  • Beef sukiyaki with onions and burdock root

  • Hijiki seaweed with vegetables

  • Red soybean miso soup

Another morning included:

  • Grilled black cod with Saikyo miso

  • Tuna sashimi

  • Deep-fried tofu fritters

  • Plum-simmered chicken

  • Barley miso broth

This rotating menu reflects Kyoto’s traditional emphasis on seasonality and balance.

Western Breakfast Option
Guests who prefer a more familiar start to the day can choose the Western breakfast at Kyoto Bistro, which includes:

  • Eggs Benedict

  • Avocado toast

  • French toast

  • Pancakes

  • Eggs with bacon and sausage

While the Western breakfast is excellent, the Japanese breakfast is the more memorable experience and worth the small upgrade.

Is the Japanese Breakfast Worth It?
For travelers visiting Kyoto for the first time, the answer is yes.
It’s not just breakfast - it’s a cultural introduction to Kyoto cuisine, with dishes that reflect centuries of Japanese culinary tradition.
Even if you normally prefer Western breakfasts, trying it once during your stay at Park Hyatt Kyoto is part of the experience.
